Thomas Beecroft
Hydro Australasia Pty Ltd

Sewer overflows continue to be a major source of pollution in Australian waterways. This paper presents two options for controlling the quantity and quality of these discharges: screening gross pollutants; and providing primary treatment at the overflow point.

Screening removes gross pollutants from sewer overflows. A new generation of self cleansing screens, the Hydro Jet Screen, is described. Results of recent independent testing of a prototype unit are presented.

Hydrodynamic Vortex Separators have been used for many years to achieve the equivalent of primary treatment of sewer overflows. This paper outlines the key aspects of the Hydro Storm King separator, and describes the basis of the high separation efficiencies observed. The effectiveness of these units is confirmed through numerous evaluation studies at different sites. These studies are summarised and some of the environmental benefits are highlighted.
