Canowindra and Eugowra are the first two towns selected by Cabonne Council under a program initiated by the Minister for Land & Water Conservation for providing low cost sewerage disposal for small communities with population less than 1000 and low growth rates. Under this program, AWT was engaged to investigate sewerage systems that are both affordable by the community and serve the purpose of eliminating the environmental and health problems associated with septic systems that are currently in use, and to recommend the most cost effective solution that satisfies the minimum health and environmental criteria for implementation. AWT was later engaged as project managers for the design and construction of the selected option.

This paper briefly outlines the options considered and the cost savings associated with the selected option. It highlights some of the problems and solutions that were adopted during the environmental impact assessment, design, procurement and construction stages of the project, which includes collection of sewerage, treatment and disposal of effluent through irrigation. The procurement strategies and the associated cost savings are also discussed.
